Planning A Village for Seniors in Greater Roxborough
- CRCA is sponsoring an exploratory group to determine if there is a need for a Village for Seniors. The Village would be a virtual community, not a brick-and-mortar community and would be designed specifically to integrate with existing community resources.
- There are over 250 such organizations across the US and three in the Philadelphia area. These are non-profit, volunteer-driven membership organizations that provide support, services and programs enabling residents to live healthy and meaningful lives in their own homes. The East Falls Village has over 230 active members and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year!
- Chuck Broadbent, CRCA Treasurer, is leading the exploratory group and is looking for individuals who are willing to work with him. If you have questions or are willing to work you can contact him at: chuck@crca.us
Community announcements:
Crosstown Coalition
- The CRCA is a member of the Philadelphia Crosstown Coalition of Civics, which is holding two mayoral forums on the evenings of March 28 (Houston Hall) and April 12 (Prince Theater). The first forum will cover schools, jobs, housing, and other issues of general concern to Philadelphians. The second will focus solely on lawlessness and gun violence, and the mayoral candidates plans to address those problems. The events may be live-streamed but this has not yet been announced. For more information, and to register, go to: https://www.philacrosstown.org and see this flyer.
Spring Cleanup
- Philly Spring Cleanup is Saturday, April 15. The annual Philly Spring Cleanup is the largest single-day cleanup event in the city and serves as the kick-off event of the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) cleaning season. Block captains and other stakeholders in communities across the city organize neighborhood cleanups and encourage residents to get involved in helping to make Philly a cleaner and greener place to live.
Roxborough Manayunk Conservancy
- The Roxborough Manayunk Conservancy (RMC) has released its Two-On-Tuesdays 2023 schedule. RMC is a volunteer organization that cleans and maintains green spaces by picking up litter, cutting back invasive plants, weeding, and planting and trimming trees. The group meets for 2 hours on Tuesdays from March until October. 6174 Ridge Ave is the old Woolworth Building plus the High Pointe Cafe building and U.S. Post Office. This is near the corner of Ridge and Hermitage Streets.
A by-right apartment building is planned for this location. It will have commercial on the ground floor, and more than 50 apartment units, which qualifies it for receiving a Civic Design Review (CDR). The CDR process requires a presentation to the affected RCOs. Unlike a variance, which offers RCOs the chance to support or oppose, this review will provide only the opportunity for public comment. This commentary is submitted to the CDR committee so they are aware of it.
The CDR review will happen in the coming months. The CDR committee is comprised of professionals in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, building and development, and sustainability, and up to two seats on the Committee for the local Registered Community Organization representatives. These meetings are open to the public.
